Project: Hong Kong Repertory Theatre Education Hub

Scope: Adaptive use of Grade 2 historic building for a new performing arts education centre.

The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre Education Hub embarked on a heritage building revitalisation project that surpassed the initial project brief, delivering added value to both the client and the environment. This project not only restored a 120-year-old building but also integrated sustainable design practices, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability into its design and construction processes.

To realise our vision of sustainable design for heritage revitalisation, we prioritised historical restoration, cultural revitalisation, environmental strategies, and ecological preservation. We implemented low-carbon retrofitting strategies, such as increasing green coverage, adopting energy-efficient glazing systems, installing skylights with solar glass, and facilitating natural ventilation. These measures not only enhanced the building's energy efficiency but also ensured the preservation of its historical significance. We integrated climate resilience into the design by incorporating a skylight that enhanced natural daylighting, reducing the need for artificial lighting and promoting energy efficiency. The skylight not only improved indoor environmental quality but also effectively managed water leakage issues, preventing further damage to the space.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we conducted a comprehensive material audit, undertaking multiple site inspections to document and evaluate items that could be reused or upcycled. Through meticulous assessment and selection, we identified materials that could be salvaged, refurbished, and incorporated into the project, thereby reducing the demand for new materials and minimising waste generation. Furthermore, we explored innovative methods of upcycling existing materials, introducing unique and inventive elements to the construction process. Notably, we successfully repurposed discarded glass panes into new glass blocks through collaboration with a local manufacturer. These glass blocks were then integrated into the design as feature and partition walls, transforming the ground floor into a gallery space that showcased the building's evolution and development.

Our project aimed to create an adaptable environment that respected the building's heritage while promoting community engagement. We worked closely with heritage conservationists to preserve the authenticity and uniqueness of the historical contexts, ensuring the building's integrity was maintained. By providing accessible and inviting indoor and outdoor spaces, we encouraged individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together, exchange ideas, and participate in cultural activities, fostering a sense of belonging and strengthening social bonds within the community. Ecological restoration was achieved through tree preservation and native planting, contributing to overall environmental well-being and providing a revitalising environment for the neighbourhood.

Zero Carbon Air Improvement Photovoltaic Canopy

Adopting strategic design and advanced technology referencing the Air Improvement Photovoltaic “AIPV” canopy built outside the eco-café in CIC Zero Carbon Park as a pilot scheme, this new AIPV installation and landscape work in the park helped improve outdoor air quality in the area. Outdoor air temperature has been reduced so that the public could better enjoy the space, and renewable energy generation helps offset its embodied carbon to net-zero carbon feature and support the eco-café operation.

First in Hong Kong and second in Asia is this AIPV installation which generates renewable energy, contributes to the environment by decomposing PM2.5 in the air, reduces carbon footprint, and increases light transparency by up to 75% for enjoyment under the shade. Besides its functional advantage, AIPV also enhances the aesthetic design of the Park. This project set forth the effort devoted to building a sustainable community at an affordable cost. Adding sustainable initiatives to the park enhances the inclusiveness and accessibility of the park where people could enjoy public open spaces with better air quality. The biophilic environment has been improved at the same time.

The higher we live from the ground level, the more disconnected we feel from the natural environment and the community. Compared with people residing away from the metropolitan area, urban dwellers lack personal and open space, and may seek room to escape from the hustle and bustle of city living.

In pursuit of environmental sustainability, this installation - Heat Sink intends to examine human-nature interfaces and the paradigm shift amongst design for humans, design for humans with nature and design for nature in the urban context. Meanwhile, it presents how advanced bio-engineering, nanotechnology and renewable technology mitigate green-house gas emission, alleviate urban heat island and improve outdoor environmental quality.

REDEFINE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN FOOD PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION

Conventional boundaries have long defined spaces of food production in the field and factory. As a result, there is a disconnect in the consumer’s experience of food production that must be rethought to encourage positive and healthy food practices. Our design concept is to return to the roots of food production, to bridge back the connection of growth from nature as the fundamental bond between people and food. Our vision is to create a space that initiates an exploratory and lively sensory experience for the world as a food-consuming community, a place of self-discovery through interaction with the natural environment.  

We believe that learning is best done through an exploratory narrative. In a sequence of outdoor sensorial exhibits on the ground floor, consumers are provided with an opportunity to find their own special moment of discovery. The exhibits promote the notion of playing in the outdoor setting. The proposed multimedia center offers a variety of different experiences for the visitors that are conducive to the role of barilla being the center of the pasta industry. The ground floor experience provides a storied journey into the production of pasta. While the second floor provides a space for interactivity between start-ups and encourages conversation.

Biophobia is developed due to people's fear of living things and unexpectedness from nature. In particular, urban dwellers have been disconnecting from nature and witnessing an extinction of the human experience of wildlife. Nature is not just a resource for human consumption but exists for its intrinsic value. Instead of sustaining nature for humanity's development, shall we nurture our innate biophilic attitude and re-establish authentic human-nature connections for the co-existence of humans and nature, especially for our children?

PLAY WITH NATURE is a set of two pieces of the public art installation "human" & "nature". It manifests the co-evolution of humans and nature in one living planet. It also engages people, especially kids, to appreciate, touch, smell, and play with daylight and green. The installation is made of recycled materials and designed for ease of erection and maintenance.

2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture - Hong Kong (UABBHK)

This project involved architects, farmers, office workers, students and the public to co-create and transform an under-flyover space to an improvised community green education hub and urban farm by upcycling discarded wood pellets and a container shed. Within the 4-month exhibition period, three batches of vegetables were harvested and over fifteen workshops, and tours involving bird watching in the city were conducted. The green education hub displayed the research of human-nature interactions in urban districts of Hong Kong in a format of questions and answers. This format facilitated easy understanding by the public.

Tony Ip was co-curator of 2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Hong Kong) and curated Concrete Jungle 2.0 at an undesignated space under flyover in the Central, Hong Kong.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION

Innovative technology allows such system produce quality food more efficiently than traditional agriculture. At the same time diminishing the carbon footprint for food transportation.

Aeroponics planting system is embedded into the 6-meter tall racks. Each of them provides 2 days of supplies; the staffs cycle through the rack to harvest and replant the product. The racks evolve at a 12-hour cycle to provide shading to regulate the interior temperature. Each of them also rotates in a 60 minutes cycle to optimise sun exposure and ventilation.

HKIA Tokyo Exhibition at GINZA SIX, Tokyo - This exhibit attempts to showcase different urban green spaces, including habourfront, pocketed green spaces, urban and country parks; street, podium, sky and roof gardens, to social integration, health and well-being of children (at the height of more than 65cm) and senior citizens (at the age of more than 65) in high-density high-rise contexts.

The higher we live from the ground, the more disconnected we feel from the natural environment. The desire of growing green in our hectic city ties with our human nature we have neglected, which leads to some self-initiated actions and paradigm shift – we keep finding ways to make the city green and alive again.

An installation of light, sound, projection and cramped spaces.

Cross-disciplinary creation needs courage, mutual understanding and adventurousness from all of us. Organized by Hong Kong Arts Centre and led by artists of four different disciplines including Tony Ip (architecture), Roy Szeto (directing), Leo Cheung (theatre lighting) and XPLOR (multi-media), students from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and City University of Hong Kong come together to create an interactive installation that interprets the spaces in Hong Kong.

Commissioned by Hong Kong Arts Centre, TiP designed and built Mobile Art Cart, and conducted a series of Sculpture Playground Creative Model Making Workshops for public at all ages. Mobile Art Cart, namely “Nine Fields 九塊田”, has revitalized nine dilapidated desks together with an extended chalkboard, serving as a mobile art classroom to promote art and architecture. Photovoltaic panels are installed to facilitate charging mobile devices.  

“Al fresco art! Take in the harbourside breeze, roll up your sleeves and get busy at an outdoor model making workshop, where you can build your own creative playground and explore the relationship between art, architecture and the city. Just look for the mobile art cart, designed by award-winning architect Tony Ip,” featured by Hong Kong Arts Centre.

Situated on the southern bank of Victoria Harbour in the heart of Harcourt Garden, Sense of Green is a multi-purpose sculpture that is inspired by and dedicated to the movement of air.

Externally, it comprises of hundreds of bamboo-like poles that stand in the prevailing wind. As the wind increases in speed, the poles flex and bend to become stronger and in the process get scratched and marked, creating a dynamic visual record of the weather.

Internally, the sculpture conceals a ventilation shaft for the South Island Line MTR station below. When viewed from the surrounding high-rise buildings above, the sculpture takes on yet another dimension – that of a super-sized pot plant that sits within the garden.

Sense of Green is an oasis of calm in the urban jungle of Hong Kong.

Commissioned by Development Bureau HKSAR, “Prelude”, located at the Central waterfront promenade, is a set of public art work under City Dess-up Art Installation Competition.

“Prelude” is effectively a stage – one that is literally designed by its surrounding scenery. Equipped with a concave backdrop that can effortlessly amplify music, “Prelude” encloses an area for local performances: whether it be at, music or theatre. The given site is already well-equipped as an attraction: with a superb view of the Harbour in front, the Ferris Wheel at the back; fresh lawns cascading from the Government Offices, and seats and shelter provided by Piers 9 and 10. What we believe is missing at the Central Promenade, is formal performance space for its spontaneous entertainers.

The front of “Prelude” is created by a tessellation of mirror-finish triangular pieces, each reflecting the surrounding scenery at an angle and coming together as a distorted collage, encouraging visitors to re-imagine Victoria Harbour.

The mirror pieces at the back reflect the view of the city, and only purposefully ruffled to present HK’s island Ridgeline. We hope to remind visitors that as well as the magnificent view of our Harbour; we have an equally impressive landscape, and together, they create the spectacular geography of the city of Hong Kong.

We consider the design of “Prelude” to be a prototype that can benefit various sites along the Promenade.

A space for artistic-spiritual retreat with the water, in the water, by the water

The higher and denser we build the city, the lesser and lighter we touch or disturb the natural ground. With less than 25% land developed out of 1,104 km2 total area, Hong Kong is accommodating over 7 million people; however, it preserves 40% land for country parks and nature reserves. Situating at one of the reservoirs within the 40% preserved green land, WATER+ hotel creates unique experience for the visitors with artistically sensible live with the water.

Over the water, it bridges places, and communicates with the public with improvised spaces for art events, leading to a reception space for the hotel users.

Above the water, it stages artists’ interactions, and accommodates gallery, library, group rooms and living room in linear flexible spatial arrangement.

Along the water, it witnesses water tables up and down, and offers naturalistic scenes of studio spaces for artists’ living and creation.

In the water, it escapes from nowhere, and creates a surreal water-scenic space for artists’ meditation and contemplation.

Interior design & build project of an office has sucessfully achieved the corporate's green vision within budget and time, incorporating co-creating space, adaptive reuse of all existing funiture, green materials (eg. FSC sustainable timber, eco-friendly paint), daylight access, indoor planting.

There is no Green Architecture, only Architecture for Green Living.

The higher the building, the more the liveable green spaces at high levels. Enjoyable green, abundant daylight and naturally-ventilated air are essential for health and well-being. Such provisions shall be pre-requisite rather than marginalized in high-density high-rise built environment or gimmicky in green buildings. How can the greenest be prioritized in the highest and densest urban contexts for every single building? How can we stand on the frontier to bargain but not compromise liveability & sustainability against efficiency & profitability?

Design wants no limitation. To a certain extent, however, some government restrictions give bargaining power to architects to fight for more green against efficiency & profitability. Once liveability and sustainability is a mandate, there is more room for green movement.

Enjoyable green, abundant daylight and naturally-ventilated air are essential for health and well-being. Such provisions shall be pre-requisite rather than marginalized in high-density high-rise built environment or gimmicky in green buildings. The next frontier of green architecture shall be advocated, including a new set of Practice Notes for Architects' Pre-emption (PNA’P) - Advocacy (ADV).

Generations live together with flats open inwards onto a courtyard - a central place for family gatherings - the family core.
"Link Chairs - Inflated Apartments" [New towers ‧ back-to-back ‧ view orientated ‧ own desire]
Tower residents long for best city views - a pleasant enjoyment - one’s own pride.

This project is to investigate the underlying driving forces for the dynamics of urban ecology affecting our family and social relationships in the eastern cultural contexts - from family centric to individualistic, and reflect these relationships through two sets of link chairs. These link chairs are not just seating objects but also aim to engage users and facilitate their interactions or own desire.

The higher we live from the ground level, the more disconnected we feel from nature and the community.
The demand for a peaceful and natural environment in urban areas has increased; people desire such green environments where they can stay, chat, and otherwise interact with their family, friends and neighbours. We need green in our everyday urban life. Can sky garden be an option of bridging nature with urban living?
My exhibit "New Ideology of Sky Gardens" showcases 100 ideas of sky gardens in high-density high-rise contexts, together with four videos on tracking the commonality of urban greenery in Taipei, Singapore and Hong Kong.
